With a month left till launch, it’s time to see how Bioware’s remastering of their ground-breaking Mass Effect trilogy is turning out. To that end, Bioware have released a comparison trailer to highlight the stark contrasts between the original games visuals and this remastered version. The remaster is clearly looking a cut above the original which is really starting to show its age.
Most of the trailer highlights the character work that’s been done to the game with some shots of the environments that you’re going to dispense Shepard justice in. It’s clear to see that the environments now have improved materials and particle effects along with overall post processing effects for depth of field and ambient occlusion, among others.
Characters are now composed of enhanced 3D models featuring improved skin rendering and remastered or entirely new textures showing off the finer detail on characters. The game also sports 4K assets, which is a must as it will be available on PS5 and XBox Series consoles along with the PS4 and Xbox One. New lighting techniques are also in the offering, both in-game and in cutscenes.
Without completely rebuilding the game from the ground up, there’s only so many improvements that Bioware can make to one of their most beloved titles but what has been shown so far is more than enough to make a replay of the epic, a must. Of course Bioware are doing more than just remastering the visuals. The team are rebalancing the game and the remaster will also include over 40 pieces of DLC, including cosmetic items and the expansions.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series and PC on May 14th 2021
